Owning wins by 2 1/2 lengths in his debut effort at Los Alamitos

Owning became the first winner for Hill 'n' Dale Farms sire Flashback  when he won his maiden special weight debut at Los Alamitos Race Course July 8.

Owned by Reddam Racing, the colt won the 5 1/2-furlong test for 2-year-olds in a final time of 1:04.20. Owning stalked the leader of the five-horse field three-wide but easily moved within a head around the turn before he took over in the stretch. Despite drifting about and running a bit green, he was able to maintain a 2 1/2-length score for trainer Simon Callaghan.

The colt was bred by Hill 'n' Dale, which also consigned the colt to the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale, where he sold to Grand Oaks for $60,000. He later returned to the sales ring in the Ocala Breeders' Sales April Sale of 2-year-olds in Training, where he was consigned by Bobby Dodd and sold for $260,000 to Eaton Bloodstock. Owning is out of the Forestry mare Meridian Mama.

A son of Tapit , Flashback showed promise early. He won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) in his second start and finished second in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) and the Santa Anita Derby (G1). After he suffered a knee injury in the latter, he did not race again for seven months. He was retired in 2014 with a record of 2-3-1 from seven starts.

Flashback's 2018 fee was $5,000.
