Apprentice Juarez Hospitalized After Fall

Description:
Apprentice jockey Nik Juarez was sent to the hospital Sept. 28 after being unseated by his mount Forward Momentum during eighth race at Monmouth Park.

"He has a bruise on his right hip," said Dr. Angelo Chinnici, medical director for the racetrack. "I sent him for x-rays and further evaluation."

The 21-year-old rider was taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J.

Before entering the first turn in the mile and 70-yard dirt race, Juarez's mount appeared to clip heels, which caused Valley King to also fall, unseating Victor Santiago, who was uninjured.

Juarez, who has won 20 races this season at Monmouth, is ninth in the overall standings. Earlier in the day he accepted the trophy for leading apprentice at the 2014 meet, which wrapped up Sunday.
