WinStar Farm's General Election won his debut at Churchill in a race contested on dirt and will try the turf in the Jefferson Cup, but the son of
Harlan's Holiday has registered victories on dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces. He secured a grade III victory on turf this season when posting a clear win May 25 in the Arlington Classic Stakes (gr. III) at
Arlington Park.
Jockey Joe Rocco Jr., who guided General Election to the Arlington Classic win, has the mount in Saturday's Jefferson Cup. Rocco will have to bounce back from a Sept. 21 spill at Churchill that saw him take off mounts Sunday, Sept. 22. The rider plans to return mid-week.
General Election will break from near the middle of the field of nine 3-year-olds going one mile on the turf.
Some other top competitors figure to be
Balino, who enters off an easy win in the Naked Greed Stakes Aug. 3 on the turf at
Calder Race Course; and a pair of horses for record-setting owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey in
Gentleman's Kitten, who posted a narrow win in an Aug. 25 allowance-optional claiming race on the inner turf at
Saratoga Race Course; and
Redwood Kitten, who enters off a third-place finish in a division of the Del Mar Derby (gr. III) Sept. 1 at
Del Mar.
All starters have been assigned 118 pounds.
