A $520,000 colt named Silvertonguedevil put Claiborne Farm stallion Flatter at the top of the sire ranking by average price following The July Sale July 10 at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks near Lexington.
Among sires with two or more sold, Flatter's progeny averaged $355,000 for two sold out of four offered. The 19-year-old son of A.P. Indy was represented by Silvertonguedevil, who was bred by Summer Wind Equine, consigned as Hip 348 by Lane's End and bought by Al Rashid Stable; and by Hip 271, a colt that Indian Creek as agent sold for $190,000 to Phil Hager's newly formed Taproot Bloodstock.
Silvertonguedevil is the third foal out of No Curfew, who was bred and raced by Summer Wind after she was bought back on a final bid of $245,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The daughter of Curlin is a half sister to black-type winner Pilfer, who is the dam of multiple grade 1 winner To Honor and Serve, grade 1 winner Angela Renee, and grade 1-placed stakes winner Elnaawi .
Summer Wind only saw No Curfew make a couple of starts without any finishes in the money. She got off to a much better start as a broodmare, with her first two foals—Night Owl (Animal Kingdom ) and Semoum (Bernardini )—both winners.
Flatter was one of five stallions whose progeny generated averages of more than $200,000 at The July Sale.
Three Chimneys' second-crop sire Will Take Charge had the day's second-highest average, with four sold out of four offered averaging $232,500. Progeny by the son of Unbridled's Song had three yearlings sell for $200,000 or more, led by a $260,000 filly out of the stakes-producing Dixie Union mare La Bella. Taylor Made Sales Agency sold the top-priced filly, who was bred in Kentucky by Forrest Hills Farm to Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable.
Darley's Street Sense had the third-highest average of $225,000 for two sold out of two offered. The son of Street Cry's top seller was Hip 312, a colt out of Mahkama, that Michael and Julia O'Quinn sold for $350,000 to Godolphin. The colt was bred in Pennsylvania by Blackstone Farm.
Spendthrift Farm's marquee sire Into Mischief had the deepest level of success among the top-10 sires by average with five sold out of five offered that averaged $222,000. Into Mischief was represented by two $300,000 yearlings—Hip 52 out of Silverest that agent J.J. Crupi bought on behalf of St. Elias Stable, and Hip 273, a colt out of Indian Gracey that Scott and Evan Dilworth bought. Both $300,000 colts were consigned by Taylor Made Sales.
Rounding out the top five sires by average was Three Chimneys' second-crop sire Strong Mandate , who had three sold out of five offered average $220,667. His top yearling brought the sale's second-highest price of $435,000, which Alex and JoAnn Lieblong paid for a filly out of the Giant's Causeway mare Fly the Flag, a half sister to grade 1 winner and champion Storm Flag Flying and stakes winner/stakes producer With Flying Colors.
Also worth noting among the sale's leading sires is Three Chimneys' first-crop yearling sire Palace Malice , who was represented by two yearlings that sold for more than $200,000. The son of Curlin had four sold out of five offered that averaged $187,500.
