The final Breeders’ Cup preparations for many contenders will be made during Fall Stars weekend at Keeneland Race Course this weekend, and some of the country’s top 2-year-old males will be looking to advance to the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a strong showing in Saturday’s Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
In addition to being a potential launching pad for future equine stars, the 2014 Breeders’ Futurity is also a solid betting race. Let’s take a look at some of the contenders and hope to score on this race using a $20 budget!
Contenders
No. 1, Tough Customer: This colt won his only career race impressively at Churchill Downs. While he certainly has all the credentials to improve and defeat top level horses in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, his lone race was only eight days ago, and perhaps he could have benefited from a little extra rest between starts.
No. 5, Carpe Diem: Another colt who is undefeated, having won the only race he ever competed in roughly a month ago at Saratoga Race Course in New York. Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, Carpe Diem is surrounded by the best human connections imaginable. He cost $1.6-million at a 2-year-old auction earlier this year and has the pedigree to be a star. However, the distance of the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity is three furlongs (three-eighths of a mile) farther than his lone victory, and I think the increase in distance could be his undoing.
No. 6, Bold Conquest: This colt has three races under his belt, with one victory and two second-place finishes. Most recently in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs, Bold Conquest was forced to race very wide and thus very likely traveled farther than his competitors in a race in which he ultimately finished second. In the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, Bold Conquest will be reunited with Rosie Napravnik, the jockey who rode Bold Conquest to his only career victory.
No. 7, Conquest Tsunami: This colt is undefeated and comes to Kentucky by way of Canada with a 4-for-4 record. In the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity however, Conquest Tsunami will be exploring uncharted waters due to the fact that he will be racing on dirt and will be racing around two turns for the first time. Apparently, he has trained well on dirt in the mornings and he will be ridden by Patrick Husbands, with whom he has had success with in Canada.
No. 10, Hashtag Bourbon: Similar to a couple of his competitors in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, Hashtag Bourbon exits the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs last month. In the Iroquois, this colt was forced to run behind horses for a majority of the race and only found open room to run very late in the race. Perhaps if he can find clearer sailing on Saturday, Hashtag Bourbon may be able to get the job done.
