Grade 1-placed stakes winner A Lot became the second son of three-time leading North American sire Tapit to stand in Australia when the colt entered stud at Mungrup Stud in Western Australia.
"We were specifically looking for a different option to Danehill and Northern Dancer lines," said Gray Williamson, owner of Mungrup, in an announcement on the farm's website. "Tapit is red-hot right now, and this son of Tapit fits the bill for WA. He holds the current 1,400-meter record on grass in North America. A Lot is a classy-looking animal with a bit of size about him. Couple those looks with his bloodlines and it makes him a great outcross for our WA mare base."
Bred in Kentucky by Liberty Road Stables, the colt was acquired by John and Jerry Amerman for $410,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling Sale out of Gainesway's consignment. Tapit stands at Gainesway for $300,000.
A Lot first went to trainer Bill Mott, who turned the colt into a winner in his second start. At 3, the colt won the Paradise Creek Stakes on the grass at Belmont Park and placed in seven other stakes, three of them graded. In 2016, A Lot was transferred to trainer Chad Brown. In his first start for Brown, A Lot set a course record for seven furlongs on the grass at Belmont in the Elusive Quality Stakes, which he won in 1:19.23.
"The horse came to us in very good condition from Bill," Brown said after the Elusive Quality Stakes. "He showed a lot of heart. The second horse had him collared well before the wire, but he wouldn't let him go by. I was most impressed by that."
In the Fourstardave Handicap (G1T), the colt finished second behind Tourist , who went on to win the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T).
A Lot, who retired with a 4-6-2 record out of 19 starts and earnings of $475,440, is the first stakes winner out of grade 1-placed winner Overly Tempting. The daughter of In Excess is the dam of one other black-type runner, stakes-placed Chairman Crooks (After Market), and has produced three winners from three foals to race. She has a yearling colt by Declaration of War and produced a filly by The Factor this year.
The stallion stands at Mungrup for an AU$5,500 fee (including the GST) alongside Playing God (AU$11,000), Oratorio (AU$11,000), and I'm All The Talk (AU$5,500). The other son of Tapit standing in Australia is Darley's three-time grade 1-winning shuttler Frosted , who stands at Northwood Park in Victoria for AU$33,000.
