Cunco, who wrote his name into the history books by becoming Frankel's first winner with a successful debut at Newbury in May 2016, will take up stud duties at Haras Santa Monica in Chile in the forthcoming southern hemisphere breeding season.
Bred and raced by the Don Alberto Corporation, Cunco followed up that memorable debut effort with a string of solid performances in stakes company. He gained his second career success on his 3-year-old reappearance when landing the Bet365 Classic Trial (G3) at Sandown.
Following a sixth-place finish in the Chester Vase (G3), Don Alberto switched Cunco from the care of John Gosden to the United States, where he originally joined Chad Brown before being moved to the stable of Bill Mott.
The 4-year-old made three starts in the U.S., but was unable to finish any nearer than sixth.
While Don Alberto has its own stud in Chile—Haras Don Alberto, where the likes of Midshipman , Tourist , and Lookin At Lucky will shuttle in 2018—Cunco has been leased to Haras Santa Monica, located near the small rural town of Linderos, and is due to arrive July 25.
Cunco, who was also Frankel's first foal, is the first produce of Chrysanthemum, a daughter of Danehill Dancer who won a pair of group 3s and three listed events while in training with David Wachman.
Chrysanthemum was bought on behalf of Don Alberto for 800,000gns (US$1,373,820) at Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2013 while carrying Cunco in utero.
Cunco is not the first son of Frankel to retire to stud, with Straight Shooter—a half brother to Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere Grand Criterium (G1) winner Naaqoos—standing at Hadjiyiannis Stud in Akaki, Cyprus, and Tango Fire taking up residency at Alias Warriach Stud near Sargodha in Pakistan.
