Hall of Fame rider Kent Desormeaux is recovering from five fractured ribs and a bruised lung in Covina, Calif., where he and his wife, Rosie, recently bought a home, according to trainer Bob Hess, a longtime friend of the jockey.

The 44-year-old Desormeaux suffered the injuries after he was unseasted and then kicked in the chest by his mount, first-time starter She's a Big Winner, during the post parade of the eighth race Sept. 28 at Santa Anita Park.

"He's hoping to be back in four weeks," Hess said.

Desormeaux, who had won three races on Sunday's card before the accident, was released from Arcadia Methodist Hospital the evening of Sept. 30.
