Jay Em Ess Stable's homebred By the Moon upset the $500,000 Frizette Stakes (gr. I) at odds of 24-1 Oct. 4 at Belmont Park, giving trainer Michelle Nevin her first grade I win .
Well-rested after a runner-up finish in the Aug. 31 Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, the 2-year-old Indian Charlie filly tracked the pace set by 2-1 second choice Cavorting and took over coming off the turn. After following outside early fractions of :22.66 and :46.11 under jockey Jose Ortiz, she got three-quarters in 1:11.48 and finished a slow mile on the sloppy, sealed track in 1:38.42.
Wonder Gal was 2 1/4 lengths back in second with Feathered completing the trifecta, one length farther behind in third. Condo Commando, who won the Spinaway by 13 1/4 lengths, finished a non-threatening fourth as the heavy 9-10 favorite.
The Frizette is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" event, providing the winner with a guaranteed berth in the Nov. 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile FIllies (gr. I) along with paid entry and starter fees and a travel stipend.
By the Moon returned $50.50, $17.40, and $7.20 while Wonder Gal paid $8.40 and $3.90, with Feathered bringing $4.10. Condo Commando, Cayman Croc, Ring Knocker, and Cavorting completed the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky out of the Malibu Moon mare By the Light, By the Moon improved her earnings to $419,800 with two wins and a second from three starts.
