Description:

Good Luck Gus took the $252,098 New York Breeders' Futurity Oct. 4 at Finger Lakes, securing his first stakes score by 5 1/4 lengths for trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

The 2-year-old colt by Lookin At Lucky   came off a fourth in the Aug. 24 Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga Race Course to earn his first victory since breaking his maiden July 28 at second asking at the Spa.

Ridden by jockey Wilfredo Rohena, Good Luck Gus was off alertly and tracked along well in the three path just off the pace set by Fallfire. That rival broke sharply and was good for a quarter in :22.47 and a half in 45.86 before surrendering the advantage.

Good Luck Gus moved to challenge midway around the turn, kicked clear in the lane, and responded when roused to draw away.

Thank You lodged a bid outside but was no match for the winner and had to settle for second, while Fallfire held third.

The winner returned $5.70, $3.60, and $3.10, with Thank You bringing $4.30 and $3.10 and Fallfire paying $7.20. Pierce's Prize, Dunn Listening, Deputy Busterstone, and Summer Brother completed the order of finish. Bustin It and Smilingsundae scratched.

Bred in the Empire State by Fred W. Hertrich III out of the Deputy Minister mare Tacticmove, Good Luck Gus was a $97,000 purchase by Michael Dubb from the Taylor Made consignment at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga preferred New York-bred yearling sale.

Campaigned by Dugg, Bethlehem Stables, and The Elkstone Group, Good Luck Gus improved his record to two wins and a second from four starts, with earnings of $217,059.
