Shadybrook Farm's Cajun Firecracker upset heavily favored Fully Loaded in the $100,000 Dr. Fager Division of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park Aug. 4 to become the first black-type winner for his sire, Cajun Breeze .
Trainer Michael Yates, who also conditioned and co-owned Cajun Breeze under his Shadybrook banner, watched Cajun Firecracker score at odds of 7-1 after stalking the pace set by Jackson. Fully Loaded took over the lead under Edgard Zayas leaving the turn into the homestretch, appearing on his way to his third victory in three starts. However, Cajun Firecracker kicked in through the stretch under Miguel Vasquez and wore down a tiring Fully Loaded to earn his second win in as many starts.
Cajun Firecracker ran six furlongs in 1:09.94 and entered off a two-length score in an April 13 maiden at Gulfstream.
Cajun Breeze amassed earnings of nearly $250,000 before his 2015 retirement. The son of Congrats never won a stakes during his 33-race career, but Yates took a chance on the horse at stud, breeding a lot of his mares to him, including Clara Bow, Cajun Firecracker's dam.
A half brother to black-type winners Cajun Delta Dawn and Mom'z Laugh, Cajun Breeze stood the 2018 season at Stonehedge Farm South in Williston, Fla., for $5,000.
