The excitement at Glorious Goodwood Aug. 1 is not confined to the racing, the seven-contest card including Without Parole taking a starring role in the Sussex Stakes (G1) and Soldier's Call bidding to back up his Windsor Castle Stakes victory in the Molecomb.
That is because Goffs UK is staging the inaugural Goodwood Sale after racing at 6.30 p.m. GMT in the winner's enclosure.
Thirteen high-class lots have been entered for the auction, comprising horses in training, breeding stock, and a lifetime breeding right to a leading young stallion.
The lots are as follows:
No. 1—Perfect Angel
A group 2-placed sister to Saturday's impressive Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes (G3) winner Angel's Hideaway.
The 4-year-old daughter of Dark Angel had been covered by Oasis Dream but is believed not in foal, and is offered in full training with Andrew Balding.
No. 2—Cosmelli
Or, at least, a 50% share in the 5-year-old son of Mr Vegas, who defeated subsequent John Smith's Cup winner Euchen Glen to take the Betfred Northumberland Vase Handicap last month.
Special sale conditions stipulate that the Ebor entrant must remain in training with Gay Kelleway until at least Dec. 31, 2019, and the remaining 50% share will be shared between Kelleway and Marc Walker. However, the horse will run in the name and colors of the new 50% owner.
No. 3—Learned Friend
An 11-year-old daughter of Seeking the Gold who is the dam of recent group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis winner Inns of Court.
The mare, who is out of Italian champion Lune D'Or and has produced another multiple winner from only two foals to have raced, is offered with a commercially desirable cover by Dark Angel.
No. 4—Marie's Diamond
A 2-year-old son of Footstepsinthesand who has developed into a really classy customer for Mark Johnston and owners Middleham Park Racing, taking the Jebel Ali Racecourse Anglesey Stakes (G3) on his last start.
He is out of a winning Kalanisi mare and hails from the strong Aga Khan family of Sinndar, so his pedigree points to there being more to come from him. He could prove that if he runs as declared in the Aug. 3 Richmond Stakes (G2).
No. 5—Breeding Right in Showcasing
A lifetime breeding right in Whitsbury Manor Stud's exciting young sire, source of Soldier's Call.
In total, the son of Oasis Dream—still only 11—has supplied 29 stakes winners including the top-notchers Quiet Reflection and Tasleet. Soldier's Call and Arqana July Stakes (G2) winner Advertise hail from his first more expensively bred crop, suggesting we have only scratched the surface of his sire-power.
No. 6—Julio
A 3-year-old Exceed And Excelcolt sent out by Mario Hofer to win a group 3 sprint at Hamburg in recent weeks.
He features among the entries for the group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood Aug. 4.
No. 7—Flying Dragon
A 2-year-old War Command colt representing the formidable owner/trainer team of Con and Theresa Marnane and Matthieu Palussiere.
He finished a close second to Shaman, a blueblooded Shamardal colt owned by the Wertheimer brothers, on debut at Chantilly July 9.
No. 8—Curiosity
A 3-year-old High Chaparral gelding trained by Hugo Palmer who is a very classy handicapper indeed.
He finished second in a valuable heat at the Newmarket July Festival, having filled the same position in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot before that. He is entered in the Thoroughbred Stakes and the Golden Mile Handicap on Friday.
No. 9—Belle Vale
A 5-year-old Cape Cross mare who forms part of a three-in-one package as she is offered in foal to Bobby's Kitten and with a Brazen Beau colt foal at foot.
The mare, who was placed at 2 in her racing career, is a half sister to the high-class middle-distance 3-year-old Mildenberger and is a member of the illustrious Reprocolor clan.
No. 10—Charming Kid
A 2-year-old Charm Spirit colt in training with Richard Fahey for the Cool Silk Partnership.
In three starts he has won a York novice stakes, finished eighth in the Norfolk Stakes and then an honorable third behind Advertise in the July Stakes. He comes with an engagement in the Richmond Stakes (G2) on Thursday and an entry in the Gimcrack Stakes (G2) at York.
No. 11—Malakeh
A 3-year-old Harbour Watch filly in training with Henk Grewe in Germany.
The half sister to Woodcote Stakes winner Smokey Storm finished second in the WEMPE German One Thousand Guineas (G2) in May and was third against colts and geldings in a group 2 over a mile at Cologne last time out.
No. 12—Weeping Wind
A 7-year-old daughter of Oratoriowho is a half sister to the high-class pair I'm Your Man and Perfect Hedge, the latter the dam of grade 1 performer Called To The Bar.
She is offered with a colt foal by dual Derby hero Harzand at foot.
No. 13—Sometimesadiamond
Winner of the listed Yeomanstown Stud Irish E.B.F. Sweet Mimosa Stakes for her owner, breeder, and trainer Jim Bolger at Naas last Wednesday.
The 3-year-old Vocalised filly has considerable pedigree appeal as a future broodmare, as she is out of the winning Galileo mare Something Graceful, a half sister to group 3 winner Oceanographer. The second dam is the South American star and later grade 2 Nassau Stakes winner Que Puntual.
The catalog should appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers.
As Goffs UK chairman and managing director Henry Beeby and Tony Williams said in their introduction: "This sale holds global appeal with horses-in-training entries that will cater for the domestic market, for Hong Kong owners who have recently been issued permits for the coming season and also for those looking for horses to target the major Australasian and Middle Eastern festivals.
"It will also cater for those looking for high-end breeding stock with three mares and two race fillies to be offered as well as a lifetime breeding right in the leading young sire Showcasing."
The stage is set, then, for another successful boutique sale tied in with a major racing festival in the mold of the Goffs London Sale on the eve of Royal Ascot, or the company's offering during Irish Champions Weekend.
