Brenda Kay Allen Jones—a respected horsewoman, animal lover, and devoted and beloved mother—died July 26 after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family in her final hours.
Born in Cincinnati, Jones moved with her family to Florida in 1962, but only after she was promised a horse. This began a lifelong love affair with horses. With her husband, Don Jones, she started with cow horses and got involved with Quarter Horses. They had a successful breeding operation of show horses as well as racehorses, producing two AQHA champions.
Jones finally found her ultimate passion with Thoroughbreds. She had great success buying and selling yearlings and 2-year-olds, and breeding. Her keen eye showed in the sales ring and on the racetrack. She loved fast horses and fast cars. She also was constantly rescuing and raising abandoned or orphaned animals.
She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Danielle Jones, and her stepdaughter, Lisa Donnelly. She was preceded in death by her father, Mac Allen. Jones is survived by her husband, daughter Danielle; stepdaughter Lisa; stepson Kevin Jones; mother Bernice Allen; sister Donna Laburno; brothers Terry and Mark Allen; grandchildren Joseph, Maxwell, and Jonathan Donnelly; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life in her honor July 30, at 6 p.m. at Golden Hills Country Club in Ocala, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance or the American Cancer Society.
