The Kentucky Derby Museum raised the newest banner commemorating a Triple Crown winner, honoring 2018 winner Justify Aug. 8.
The banner features the silks of WinStar Farm, which jockey Mike Smith wore when he won the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) aboard Justify.
Campaigned by WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Starlight Racing, and Head of Plains Partners, Justify won all six of his starts as a 3-year-old under the care of trainer Bob Baffert. Before his Triple Crown victories, the son of the late Scat Daddy broke his maiden Feb. 18 at Santa Anita Park, following that effort with a 6 1/2-length score March 11 at the Southern California track. He then battled with Derby contender Bolt d'Oro for a three-length win in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) before heading to Louisville for the Run for the Roses.
The banner was added to the 12 silks representing each past Triple Crown winner. Justify's banner is the 13th. The banners hang high over the museum's great hall, where the 360-degree film "The Greatest Race" is shown every hour at 10 minutes after the hour in the museum.
The last time the museum hung a banner was in 2015 in honor of American Pharoah . Before his triumph, the previous Triple Crown was won in 1978 by Affirmed.
The Triple Crown winners are Sir Barton, Gallant Fox, Omaha, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Count Fleet, Assault, Citation, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, American Pharoah, and Justify.
