Peter Brant's Sistercharlie kept the Chad Brown train rolling in the $600,000 Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) Aug. 11, with the trainer's fourth straight score in the race at Arlington International Racecourse.
To do so, however, the Myboycharlie filly had to hold off stablemate Fourstar Crook late but did so comfortably to finish the 1 3/16-mile turf test a half-length ahead in 1:56.77 under jockey John Velazquez.
Longshot pacesetter Thais held for third, just ahead of last-out Modesty Handicap (G3T) winner Daddys Lil Darling.
Thais held a clear lead early and set a moderate pace—with fractions of :24.53, :50.53, and 1:15.29 through six furlongs—as Sistercharlie raced in seventh, then sixth. Turning for home, the eventual winner swung four wide and surged by Thais and another Brown stablemate, Inflexibility.
"It was a perfect trip," Velazquez said. "We broke a little slow like always. As soon as we went past the wire (the first time), I looked for the position I wanted and I got it. Then I sat there and I saw Ryan Moore (aboard Athena) move on the outside into the backstretch and kind of pushed him out and he came in, and I kind of followed him from there.
"From the half-mile pole there was just one horse to beat, so I put her right behind that one, and when I asked her she responded really well.
"She's a really good horse, but she has some quirks. She can run, though."
After Daddys Lil Darling came Inflexibility, Nyaleti, Athena, Oh So Terrible, and Dona Bruja to complete the order of finish.
Brown first won the Beverly D. in 2011 with Stacelita, then scored with Watsdachances in 2015, Sea Calisi in 2016, and Dacita in 2017.
Bred in Ireland by Ecurie Des Monceaux, out of the Galileo mare Starlet's Sister, Sistercharlie has more than $1.4 million in earnings—$954,200 in just four races this year, after scores in the Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T) and Diana Stakes (G1T) and a second to Fourstar Crook in the New York Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2T).
"She's very consistent," Brown said. "She's the type of mare any trainer would love to have."
