Irish-bred Hunt and Kentucky-bred Sharp Samurai head a field of 13 scheduled to compete in the $200,000 Del Mar Mile (G2T) Aug. 19.
Hunt won the 2017 Eddie Read Stakes (G2T) and Del Mar Handicap Presented by The Japan Racing Association (G2T) last summer at the seaside racetrack. The son of Dark Angel will have Flavien Prat in the saddle as he attempts to rebound from a disappointing performance in this year's Eddie Read, in which he finished 10th and last.
Sharp Samurai, a top 3-year-old at Del Mar a year ago, after he swept the La Jolla Handicap (G3T) and Del Mar Derby (G2T), comes into the Del Mar Mile in fine form, beaten just a neck by longshot Catapult in the Eddie Read. Regular rider Gary Stevens has the call again.
The Del Mar Mile also attracted Catapult, who scored in the Eddie Read at 21-1; Fly to Mars, who set a Del Mar course record of 1:39.50 for 1 1/16 miles on turf in the California Dreamin' Stakes; Bowies Hero, winner of the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T) in March; and two invaders, Argentine-bred Le Ken, fifth in the 2017 Del Mar Mile, and Cannaught Cup (G2T) winner Caribou Club.
