California-based sire Mesa Thunder picked up his first winner Thursday, Oct. 9, when Aloha Ke Akua rallied from last of five and drew off in the stretch to post a 5 1/2-length victory in a maiden claiming race for 2-year-old fillies at Fresno.
Fran and Stan Hodge homebred Aloha Ke Akua was making the second start of her career. Out of the Flying Paster mare Brilliant Sunlight, she is the first starter for freshman sire Mesa Thunder.
Mesa Thunder, a half brother to two-time grade I winner Midnight Lucky, stood the 2014 season for $1,000 at Paradise Road Ranch in Lathrop, Calif. Mesa Thunder has two current 2-year-olds and seven yearlings.
