Spendthrift Farm's stallion roster had strong representation at Fasig-Tipton's New York-Bred Preferred Yearlings Sale that ended Aug. 12 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The farm's marquee sires Into Mischief and Malibu Moon were the sale's top two leading sires by average price among stallions represented by two or more sold.
Into Mischief led the sire rankings with a $335,000 average for two sold out of three offered. Paramount Sales consigned the highest-priced Into Mischief yearling, a filly out of the black-type winner Risky Rachel that Kindred Stables bought for $350,000. Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield as agent for Sunnyfield Farm sold the other Into Mischief yearling, a colt bred by Joanne Nielsen out of the Grand Slam mare Silken Lily that sold for $320,000 to Michael Neatherlin.
The family of Silken Lily has been particularly productive for Nielsen this week. Silken Lily is an unraced daughter of the Touch Gold mare Party Silks, who is the dam of multiple grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Upstart , who is now at stud at Airdrie Stud in Central Kentucky. During the opening night of Fasig-Tipton's The Saratoga Sale Aug. 6, a colt by American Pharoah out of Party Silks sold to M.V. Magnier for $1 million.
Peter Brant's White Birch Farm bought the highest-priced Malibu Moon yearling at the New York-bred Preferred sale, a $300,000 filly out of the winning Empire Maker mare Tulipmania that sold early on the sale's first day. Craig and Holly Bandoroff's Denali Stud consigned the filly for Gallagher Stud, who bred Tulipmania out of Eventail, a black-type-winning daughter of Lear Fan. After racing Eventail, Gallagher bred graded stakes winner Straight Story (by Giant's Causeway) out of the mare before selling her for $925,000 to Shadai Farm at the 2006 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
Spendthift had one other stallion among the New York-bred sale's top 10 sires, which was ninth-ranked Goldencents . The grade 1-winning son of Into Mischief was represented by two sold of four offered that averaged $152,500. A freshman sire this year, Goldencents' top seller was Hip 560 that Gainesway sold for $210,000 to Mike Stinson. The filly bred by Rhapsody Farm in New York is out of the Quiet American daughter Quite the Sis, who is a half sister to black-type winner Stage Player and stakes-placed winner Elaine's Angel.
Claiborne Farm's Blame was the third-leading sire with a $235,000 average from two sold out of as many offered. The son of Arch's top seller was a $285,000 colt out of the stakes-producer Pavati. Taylor Made Sales Agency sold the colt that was bred by Fred Hertrich III in New York and is a half brother to graded-placed black-type winner Party Boat (by Into Mischief).
Rounding out the top five sires was WinStar Farm's veteran Tiznow , who had an average of $202,500 from two sold; and the late City Zip, who had three sold from three offered generate an average of $200,000.
