Charles Fipke's homebred grade 1 winner Bee Jersey has been retired from racing after injuring a tendon, it was announced Aug. 21.
The son of Jersey Town stamped himself among the top milers in the country when he captured the June 9 Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park in his final start. That win was the fourth straight victory for the 4-year-old colt, a streak that also included a victory in the Steve Sexton Mile Stakes (G3).
Bee Jersey began his career for trainer Doug Watson in Dubai, where as a maiden he ran second in the U.A.E. Two Thousand Guineas Sponsored By District One Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City (G3) to Thunder Snow, who subsequently won the 2018 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1). Later transferred to the barn of Steve Asmussen, Bee Jersey won five of his six starts in North America.
Produced from the stakes-placed Rahy mare Bees, Bee Jersey's third dam Lassie's Lady was a half sister to Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, the dam of leading sire A.P. Indy and other notables.
"He's just a gorgeous, absolutely brilliantly fast horse with a great temperament," Asmussen said of Bee Jersey.
Bee Jersey retires with five wins from 10 starts and earnings of $976,293. Fipke has yet to make a final determination of where the horse will stand in 2019 and said he will evaluate all offers in the coming months.
