There will be no Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) this year for Moulin de Mougin, winner of the John C. Mabee Stakes (gr. IIT), who is scheduled for a 60-day break to get over bone bruising suffered in a spill.
The 4-year-old filly, owned by Ran Jan Racing and trained by Richard Mandella, is to be turned out at a farm to recuperate, said owner Jan Van de Bos Oct. 11.
"Richard Mandella and Moulin's veterinarian, Jeff Blea, deserve all the credit," Van de Bos said. "They did a full body scan on her and discovered the bone bruising. She will be fine, but we feel that time off will really help her."
In the Sept. 27 Rodeo Drive Stakes (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park, Moulin de Mougin clipped heels, slipped, and fell while making a big move on the final turn, throwing jockey Mike Smith, who was unhurt. The filly got to her feet and galloped off, being picked up by an outrider. Initially, it appeared she suffered only a minor scrape on her shoulder.
The nuclear scintigraphy scan showed some bone bruising in the shoulder and stifle, prompting Mandella and Van de Bos to give Moulin de Mougin a rest.
Van de Bos and her husband, Robert Naify, own Moulin de Mougin in the name of their Ran Jan Racing. They bred the daughter of Curlin —Cambiocorsa, by Avenue of Flags.
Moulin de Mougin has won four of 14 starts for earnings of $313,160. In addition to winning the Aug. 10 Mabee at Del Mar, she finished third in the June 28 Royal Heroine Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita.
