A pair of top 3-year-olds preparing for starts in this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park delivered workouts on opposite sides of the country Monday, Oct. 13, as classic winner Tonalist and grade I winner Bayern completed Columbus Day workouts.

Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Tonalist breezed five furlongs in 1:03.04 on the Belmont Park main track Monday, a move that ranked 28th of 34 at the distance. The exercise was the first for Tonalist since the son of Tapit   defeated older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (gr. I) Sept. 27, at Belmont.

Robert S. Evans' Tonalist, who is trained by Christophe Clement, is preparing for a start in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

Meanwhile at Santa Anita, Bayern earned the bullet among 58 moves at five furlongs when he completed the distance in :58 2/5 for trainer Bob Baffert. Kaleem Shah's Bayern has turned in a pair of swift works since his Sept. 20 victory in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) at Parx Racing

Bayern is a top contender for the Classic but Baffert has said he also will consider the Dirt Mile (gr. I) and Xpressbet Sprint (gr. I) for the son of Offlee Wild   who won this year's William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) at Monmouth Park.

Other workouts of note on Monday at Belmont included Homecoming Classic Stakes winner Cigar Street, in his first move since winning that Churchill Downs stakes race, working four furlongs in :47.58 (4th of 66 at distance) as he prepares for a Classic start for trainer Bill Mott. Mott also sent out multiple grade I winner Emollient for a four-furlong move in :49.58 (6/17) on the inner turf listed as good. It marked the first official workout for the Empire Maker filly since her Sept. 27 win in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (gr. IT) at Santa Anita as she prepares for the Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT).

Other works of note at Santa Anita Monday included last year's Sprint winner Secret Circle handily working five furlongs in :58 4/5 (3/58) for Baffert. The move was the first for the son of Eddington   since his third-place finish in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 4 at Santa Anita. Baffert also saw Fed Biz handily complete six furlongs in 1:12 2/5 (2/12) as the recent Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) runner-up prepares for the Classic.

Trainer John Sadler's grade I winner Iotapa handily work five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 (29/58) at Santa Anita as the daughter of Afleet Alex   prepares for a start in the Distaff (gr. I).
