Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Bennett's Touching Promise rated in second behind leader Saturday Nite Ride, took over heading for home and won comfortably in the $100,000 Ballerina Stakes (Can-III) Oct. 13 at Hastings Race Course.
Ridden by California- based Mario Gutierrez for trainer Barbara Heads, Touching Promise covered the 1 1/8 miles on a sloppy track in 1:51.18. She finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of late-running Madeira Park, who won the Ballerina last year; Wando Woman, second in the race last year, finished 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
Touching Promise, by Touch Gold out of the Old Trieste mare Promise One, was bred in British Columbia, Canada, by her owners. The 4-year-old filly, who has won three of 20 starts and earned $137,490, finished third behind Madeira Park and Wando Woman in the 2013 Ballerina.
Touching Promise paid $29.10, $13.40, and $4.60 across the board. Madeira Park returned $5.50 and $3.20, while Wando Woman paid $3.70 to show. The $2 exacta was worth $131.20 and the $2 trifecta $316.10.
