Alert Bay Beats Older Foes in Premier's 'Cap

Description:

British Columbia Derby (Can-III) winner Alert Bay tackled older foes for the first time and registered a smart victory in the British Columbia Premier's Handicap (Can-III)  Oct. 13 at Hastings Race Course.

Owned by Peter Redekop, trained by Anita Bolton, and ridden by Rico Walcott, Alert Bay dueled early with Prohibition, dropped back slightly after one-mile, and re-rallied to edge by Mysterious Soul to win the 1 3/8-mile event in 2:17.93 on a sloppy track.

Mysterious Soul, who rated in third before taking the lead after one mile, finished a strong second. Shooting Jacket was third and Koffee Grinder, who finished second behind Alert Bay in the British Columbia Derby, finished a troubled fourth.

Alert Bay, a 3-year-old gelding by City Zip   out of the Dushyantor mare Hickory, was bred in California by Thomas Newton Bell and Ross John McLeod. He now has five wins, four seconds, and one third in 11 career starts, with earnings of $368,279.

Alert Bay paid $5.50, $3.30, and $3 across the board. Mysterious Soul returned $16.30 and $7.60, while Shooting Jacket was worth $7.30. The $1 exacta paid $49.75 and the $1 trifecta $322.60.
