Multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Revolutionary has been retired from racing and will stand the 2015 breeding season at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky., it was announced Oct. 14.
A stud fee for the 4-year-old son of War Pass has been set at $7,500 stands & nurses and he will participate in WinStar's Dream Big Program, which offers breeders the opportunity to earn a lifetime breeding right after producing two live foals from his first books. He is available for inspection at WinStar.
"Revolutionary has the talent, class, looks, and pedigree to be any kind of sire, and he'll get every advantage that other successful homebreds like Distorted Humor and Super Saver have gotten in their respective stallion careers," said Elliott Walden, WinStar president and CEO.
"It is very rare that you can take a great conformation photo of a stallion prospect while he's still in training, but Revolutionary is the exception. His great looks and strong female family are big reasons why we already have several of our own mares committed to his first book. He's a fantastic opportunity in our Dream Big Program, which has been very popular with our breeders. Last year, we booked Overanalyze very quickly on the Dream Big Program, and we anticipate Revolutionary will be just as well-received."
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Revolutionary broke his maiden by 8 1/2 lengths as a 2-year-old in New York. In his first start at 3, he showed great determination to overcome a troubled trip and win the $200,000 Withers Stakes (gr. III) Aqueduct Racetrack.
Revolutionary catapulted to the top of Steve Haskin's Derby Dozen heading into the $1 million Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots. Despite giving up significant ground on the far turn, Revolutionary showed his customary acceleration and determination to roll by the field for a decisive victory in the prestigious prep race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). He remained No. 1 on the Derby Dozen for five weeks leading up to the Derby, where he again had to overcome trouble before finishing a strong third behind Orb .
In 2014, Revolutionary returned at Gulfstream Park with a handy win over next-out grade II winner Falling Sky, running a mile in 1:35 flat. He again faced trouble in a runner-up performance in the $600,000 Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II), falling just three-quarters of a length short to champion Will Take Charge . Revolutionary rebounded in his next start with an electrifying win in the $300,000 Pimlico Special Stakes (gr. III) at Pimlico Race Course, cruising past grade I winner Moreno to prove best as the betting favorite while boosting his career earnings to $1,353,125.
Revolutionary retires with a 5-3-2 career record from 13 starts at distances from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles. He was bred in Kentucky by W.S. Farish out of the grade I-winning A.P. Indy mare Runup the Colors, who took the prestigious Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in 1997. The female family represents one of the top Farish-produced lines, with a dozen blacktype winners within the first two dams including Horse of the Year Mineshaft . Similar to Super Saver , the family traces back to one of the best Phipps families, including the direct line of the breed-shaping mare La Troienne.
