Treasure Beach , winner of the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) and Secretariat Stakes (G1T), was represented by his first black-type winner Sept. 1 when Decorated Ace won the $78,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park.
The 2-year-old filly tracked the pace closely on the inside during the early part of the one-mile turf event for her division, moved up inside on the far turn, and rallied two wide into the stretch. With jockey Hector Diaz Jr. giving the cue, she closed willingly just past the eighth pole and moved clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:37.36.
Trained by owner Brenda McCarthy, Decorated Ace was bred in Florida by Helen Barbazon and Joseph Barbazon out of the Joyeaux Danseur mare Graceful Ace. The Sorority was her maiden-breaking score. In three prior starts, she was fifth twice in July and ran third Aug. 11.
Treasure Beach raced for Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Michael Tabor, and near the end of his career, Mrs. Fitriani Hay joined in ownership. He was trained by Aidan O'Brien through a 22-race campaign that closed with a 5-4-2 record and earnings of $2,435,343. Along with his two grade 1 wins, he also captured the 2011 MBNA Chester Vase (G3). The son of Galileo and the Mark of Esteem mare Honorine retired to Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida in 2014 for a $10,000 fee, which has remained the same.
