Blessed Two takes the OLG Simcoe Stakes Aug. 29 at Woodbine

T.C. Westmeath Stud Farm's freshman sire Souper Speedy  took a commanding lead among the first-crop sire ranks Aug. 29 when he got his first two black-type winners in consecutive races at Woodbine.

Blessed Two became the first to earn black-type honors in the $175,000 OLG Simcoe Stakes Presented by Samuel, Son and Co. Limited, a 6 1/2-furlong race for colts and geldings foaled in Canada.

Campaigned by owner Derek Chin and trainer Kevin Attard, Blessed Two tracked far back in last through much of the race, not even seen on the simulcast broadcast down the back stretch and through the turn. The colt caught the field as they rounded into the top the stretch, where jockey Gary Boulanger swung him into the middle of Woodbine's all-weather main track and blew past all challengers to win by a head. The final time was 1:19.99.

Blessed Two was bred in Ontario by Jennifer Leuty out of the stakes-placed Bold Executive mare Birsay. The colt was bought by Chin for CA$65,000 (US$51,493) at the 2017 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Canadian-bred Yearling Sale (Ontario Division) out of the Willow Ridge Farm Thoroughbreds consignment.

The Simcoe Stakes was Blessed Two's maiden win in addition to his first black-type victory. He debuted July 29 in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight in which he finished third.

In the card's following race, the OLG Muskoka Stakes Presented by Ballycroy Training Centre for 2-year-old fillies foal in Canada, Speedy Soul became Souper Speedy's second black-type winner for trainer Andrew Smith.

Speedy Soul also delivered a commanding performance after getting bumped at the start and being forced to track near the back of the 14-horse field for the first half-mile of the 6 1/2-furlong race. Jockey Kazushi Kimura also took the widest route home, passing the field with such a burst of acceleration that Speedy Soul was four lengths clear at the wire. Her final time was 1:18.53.

Speedy Soul is undefeated in two starts. She won her debut Aug. 10, a six-furlong maiden special weight, by a length.

A homebred racing for Joey Gee Thoroughbreds, Speedy Soul is the fourth foal and first black-type winner produced by Perfect Soul 's daughter Classic Soul.

Souper Speedy, a grade 2-placed stakes winner by Indian Charlie, raced as a homebred for Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Plantation. Trained by Tom Albertrani, he was second in the Remsen Stakes (G2) at 2 and won the Jaipur Stakes at 4. He retired with a 4-3-1 record out of 11 starts and $340,634 in earnings.

Out of the unraced Gone West mare Speed Succeeds, Souper Speedy is a half brother to Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner Brilliant Speed (by Dynaformer) and stakes-placed winner Karma Delight (Medaglia d'Oro ). Speed Succeeds is a half sister to grade 2 winner Serenading and stakes winner Handpainted (both by A.P. Indy).

Souper Speedy stands at T. C. Westmeath Stud Farm in Ontario for CA$3,000. He sits atop the Canada first-crop sire list with $280,133 in progeny earnings and five winners out of eight starters.
