Canadian Derby (G3) winner Sky Promise will head a field of 12 in the 1 1/8-mile British Columbia Derby (G3) at Hastings Park Sept. 8.
The $150,000 race for 3-year-olds is the feature race on the Hastings card Saturday, which includes the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks, two stakes for 2-year-olds, and two $50,000 handicaps.
Trained by Robertino Diodoro, Sky Promise won the Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs, also going 1 1/8 miles, by 7 1/2 lengths Aug. 6. The score was his first for his new trainer and the first since he broke his maiden in July of 2017, when he was under the care of Ken McPeek.
The son of Sky Mesa was claimed out of a June 7 race at Churchill Downs, but was claimed again in his very next start June 30 at the Louisville track, when Rick and Clayton Weist, R 6 Stable, and Norman Tremblay signed the $40,000 claim ticket.
Sky Promise won the Manitoba Derby right out of the gate for his new connections and followed it with a one-length score over fellow British Columbia entrant Day Raider in the Aug. 25 Canadian Derby going 1 3/8 miles at Northlands Park.
The newly minted graded stakes winner had previously finished sixth in his only other graded effort, the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) in March.
Others providing competition in the British Columbia Derby are multiple stakes winner Weekend Wizard, who comes in off a second in the Muckleshoot Derby at Emerald Downs; and Count Latham Handicap winner Apalachee Bay.
