Palace, Lea Colts Top Louisiana Yearling Sale

Colts from the first crops of Palace  and Lea  brought six-figure bids the Sept. 6 Consignor Select Yearling Sale conducted by Equine Sales of Louisiana in which the gross and average receipts increased over 2017.

The Opelousas, La.-based sales company reported 148 horses sold for gross receipts of $1,937,700, for an average price of $13,093 and a $6,000 median. In 2017 there were 141 yearlings sold for $1,651,900 with an average of $11,716 and median of $7,000. The 58 horses that went unsold this year represented an RNA rate of 28.2%, almost equal the 27.3% figure a year ago.

The $105,000 sale-topper was Hip 93, an accredited Louisiana-bred son of Palace, the multiple grade 1 winner whose first foals are yearlings this year. Consigned by 4M Ranch, agent, the colt was purchased by J. Stevens Bloodstock, agent. The dark bay or brown colt was produced from the winning Kafwain mare Sheer Speed, a half sister to multiple stakes winner and $891,012-earner Red Lead.

Palace, a son of City Zip, stands at Spendthrift Farm near Lexington. His 2018 fee was $6,000.

The other six-figure transaction was the $100,000 winning bid of Carl Moore Management for a Lea colt, the Donn Handicap (G1) who stands at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. Consigned by Red River Farm, agent, the accredited Louisiana-bred is a half brother to Louisiana Stallion Stakes winner Kylie's Cutie and is out of the Corinthian mare Beat the Street.

Leading consignor by gross with $386,800 for 27 yearlings sold was Clear Creek Stud. Grassroots Training & Sales topped the buyers' list, with eight purchased for $217,000.
