The Blattler family in Alberta, Canada, has gone all-in on a decision to jump into Thoroughbred breeding and racing.
It's one thing to shift the majority of horses in the stable to Thoroughbreds, but Cassandra Blattler also acquired second-crop stallion and grade 3 winner No Hesitation and has begun acquiring mares—including the mare who produced the sire's best runner.
Barbara Side, who campaigned No Hesitation, was willing to sell the stallion, but not to just anyone. Side knew Blattler's daughter, Codi, who turned 18 this year and took out her trainer's license. When she found out the family was interested, a deal was quickly done.
"I actually got No Hesitation as an anniversary gift. How about that?" said Cassandra Blattler. "Who needs diamonds?"
No Hesitation, a son of Siberian Summer out of black-type winner Fancee Bargain (by Candi's Gold), won the Canadian Derby (G3) at Northlands Park and three other black-type stakes. The stallion has only seven foals in his first three crops but ranks 10th among Canada's leading second-crop sires through Sept. 12Â because of his four-time, non-black-type-winning daughter Pretty Dark Rose. The 3-year-old filly is out of stakes-placed Mandi Tambi, whom Blattler also has acquired.
"Right now we're racing both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses, because that is what you do around here, waiting for that good horse to come along and let us break out to the 'A' tracks. We're super excited about No Hesitation," Blattler said.
No Hesitation will stand at Delaney Veterinary Services in Sherwood Park, Alberta, for a $1,000 fee in 2019.
