Description:
Lane's End Farm has purchased an interest in Robert S. Evans' two-time grade I-winning 3-year-old Tonalist

The son of leading sire Tapit   has won three graded stakes this season, including the Belmont Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup (both gr. I), becoming just the second 3-year-old to accomplish that double since Easy Goer in 1989.

"We are extremely excited to acquire an interest in this outstanding colt. His sire is quickly becoming the most important stallion in America," said Lane's End owner Will Farish. "Tonalist is his only grade I-winning son at a mile-and-a-quarter and the only multiple grade I-winning son."

Bill Farish continued, "We've had great success with classic stallions and he certainly adds to that legacy. A.P. Indy, Lemon Drop Kid  , Curlin  , and Union Rags   won races like the Belmont and Gold Cup; we feel Tonalist will continue that success."

A Kentucky-bred produced by the the Pleasant Colony mare Settling Mist, Tonalist is from the immediate female family of multiple grade I winner Riskaverse (by Dynaformer) and 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace (by Saint Liam).

Tonalist will make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park.

"It's been an incredible year and we're very fortunate to own a horse the caliber of Tonalist," Evans said. "He's a leading candidate for champion 3-year-old and depending on the outcome of the Breeders' Cup, even Horse of the Year."

Trained by Christophe Clement, Tonalist has a 4-2-1 career line from eight starts and $1,802,000 in earnings. His record also includes a victory in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) in May at Belmont Park, a runner-up finish in the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) in July, and a third in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) in August, both at Saratoga Race Course.
