Native Bombshell shook off the rust after a year's absence, coming from off the pace to get up by a neck over favored Disco Barbie in the $139,006 Ontario Fasion Stakes (gr. III) Oct. 19 at Woodbine.
Patrick Husbands drove Native Bombshell to victory after getting clear on the outside in the stretch to prevail over the 8-5 choice in the field of 10 older fillies and mares. Pacesetter Cryptic Message was third in the six-furlong Polytrack test completed in a time of 1:09.48.
"She gave me everything I asked her for," Husbands said. "The race had a lot of speed. She broke on top, but she relaxed good so I had a good trip. When I let her out, she gave me everything."
Trained by Chad Brown for Michael Dubb, the Elkstone Group, Bethlehem Stables, et al., Native Bombshell was making her first appearance since last Oct. 26 when she eked out a nose victory in the Ruling Angel Stakes at Woodbine.
The public was not deterred by the long layoff, sending the 4-year-old daughter of War Front to the post as the 3-1 second choice. After shuffling back to eighth soon after the start, she advanced to settle in midpack as Cryptic Message and Eurico Rosa Da Silva showed the way by about 1 1/2 lengths through a :22 opening quarter mile and :44.41 for the half.
Cryptic Message continued to dictate matters to midstretch over Casablanca Kiss and Goldstryke Glory as Native Bombshell closed in from fourth. Disco Barbie was a bit unlucky for Trevor McCarthy, forced to wait for room behind a wall of horses around the bend but came on forcefully between rivals when clear. In the lane, Native Bombshell and Disco Barbie hooked up for the charge to the wire in the final sixteenth with Native Bombshell prevailing on the outside.
Disco Barbie was a 1 1/4 lengths in front of Cryptic Message, who was followed by Cat Lore, Goldstryke Glory, Strike the Moon, Casablanca Kiss, Youcan'tcatchme, Thats Our Princess, and Silent Treat.
Bred in Kentucky by B. D. Gibbs Farm and Fleetwood Bloodstock out of the winning Pulpit mare Flat Screen, the winning dark bay filly sold for $150,000 to Dubb and the Elkstone Group through consignor Glenwood Farm, agent, at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Native Bombshell won for the fourth time in six tries while banking $207,293.
Carrying 115 pounds, she paid $8.50, $3.60, and $3.10, topping a $24.90 exacta with Disco Barbie, who returned $3.30 and $2.40. Cryptic Message paid $9 to show.
