Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen's 2017 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Stormy Liberal will try for a third straight win when he faces eight expected rivals in the $100,000 Eddie D Stakes (G3T) Sept. 28 at Santa Anita Park.
Stormy Liberal enters Friday's about 6 1/2-furlong test on the downhill turf course off a pair of narrow victories sprinting on the Del Mar grass, where he took an optional-claiming allowance test July 25 and the Green Flash Handicap Aug. 17.
BALAN: Stormy Liberal Edges Richard's Boy Again at Del Mar
Trained by Peter Miller, Stormy Liberal registered his most significant win at Del Mar, where he took last year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, but the 6-year-old Stormy Atlantic gelding also has enjoyed success down the hill, where in his past 10 starts he has six wins and four seconds, including consecutive victories last season in the Clocker's Corner, Joe Hernandez, Siren Lure, and Daytona (G3T) stakes.
A top challenge for Stormy Liberal in the Eddie D, the featured race for the Santa Anita fall meet opener, might come from stablemate Conquest Tsunami. Gary Barber's Conquest Tsunami won a pair of races on the unique hillside course to start the year, including a 2 1/2-length victory in the Daytona Stakes. In June, Conquest Tsunami finished second to Disco Partner in the Jaipur Invitational Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park, one of the season's toughest turf sprints to date.
