Grade 1-winning millionaire Long On Value—whose career spanned 32 starts over six seasons—has been retired, his connections announced Oct. 4. Plans for his stud career are still being determined.
Bred in Virginia by Snow Lantern Thoroughbreds, Long On Value began with trainer Don Roberson and won his first two starts with the trainer, breaking his maiden at first asking June 10, 2013, going 4 1/2 furlongs on the dirt at Delaware Park. He then added the Jamestown Stakes at Colonial Downs.
After transferring to the barn of Randy Allen for his third start, Long On Value won the Strike Your Colors Stakes back at Delaware Park by six lengths.
Wachtel Stable and George Kerr obtained the son of Value Plus and transferred him to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. He made two unsuccessful attempts in top-level stakes but eventually found his potential when he put his turn of foot to use on the grass.
Long On Value earned his first graded stakes win in the 2014 Twilight Derby (G2T) and began his 2015 campaign with a victory in the Canadian Turf Stakes (G3T). Two years later, he fell a nose short in the Al Quoz Sprint Sponsored By Azizi Developments (G1) on the Dubai World Cup undercard at Meydan. He ended his 2017 season with a third-place run behind eventual champion World Approval in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T).
Purchased by trainer Brad Cox as agent for $100,000 out of the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and brought back in the conditioner's shedrow, Long On Value won both of his starts this season at 7, finally getting top-level accolades with a victory in the June 30 Highlander Stakes (G1T) going six furlongs at Woodbine.
"Long On Value had a fantastic turn of foot," Cox said. "We knew that if we got him within striking distance turning for home, he was going to find a way to get there. He was an amazing horse, and we were looking forward to running him in the Breeders' Cup this year. Unfortunately, we won't get that chance. I'm grateful for the grade 1 he gave our team … and (I am) looking forward to seeing what he can do in his next career."
Owned by Madaket Stables, Ten Strike Racing, and Steve Laymon, Long On Value retires with nine wins from 32 starts and $1,136,253 in earnings. He is out of the Orientate mare Long Message, a half sister to multiple stakes winner Long Distance (Expensive Decision) and stakes-placed winner Love On Hold (Prenup).
