The Breeders’ Cup is just around the corner, and with pre-entries taken yesterday, the excitement is palpable. Want some quick facts and numbers to spout when you’re discussing the big event with your friends? Read on.
1. The 2014 Breeders’ Cup is the 31st running of the event, which was first held in 1984 at Hollywood Park in California.
2. Just one horse has won three Breeders’ Cup races: Goldikova. This year Secret Circle will try to join her when he contests the Sprint, after winning the Juvenile Sprint in 2011 and the Sprint last year.
3. Da Hoss, Ouija Board, and Secret Circle are the only three horses to win non-consecutive Breeders’ Cup races. This year 2011 Turf Sprint victor Regally Ready may get a chance to earn another win in the race, and 2011 Juvenile Fillies Turf champ Stephanie’s Kitten will try to add a Filly and Mare Turf win to her resume.

4. This year’s Breeders’ Cup features the winners of all three 2014 Triple Crown races as well as the winner of the Kentucky Oaks.
5. Last year $139,418,666 were bet on the Breeders’ Cup, and 94,628 fans attended.
6. The average Classic win payout is $28.22! The Breeders’ Cup is great for making a few bucks off your astute wagering skills.
7. Speaking of handicappers – a record 201 horses were pre-entered this year, amounting to an average of 15.5 per race. Though that number is higher than the permitted field size (14), it ensures one of the best betting opportunities all year.
8. Of those 201 pre-entries, 38 were from overseas.
9. The Turf Sprint attracted the most pre-entries this year, with a whopping 29. That’s more than twice the maximum field size! The Turf Sprint has the highest average field size of any Breeders’ Cup race, 13.8.

10. Of the 39 horses that have gone off at 100-1 or greater, only 1993 Classic winner Arcangues finished in the money.
11. But be cautious of a heavy favorite, too – of 49 odds-on favorites in the history of the event, less than half (22) won.
12. If you were the lucky winning ticket holder of the 1999 Breeders’ Cup Pick 6, you would have pocketed $3,058,138.60 (minus taxes, of course).
13. Sports talk TV and radio host Jim Rome is going for a third straight Breeders' Cup win. He was part-owner of 2012-2013 Turf Sprint winner Mizdirection, and he is part-owner of 2014 Classic favorite Shared Belief.

14. Skip Away was the richest horse ever to enter a Breeders’ Cup race, with $9,616,360 in earnings prior to the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic. This year’s richest? California Chrome, with $3,542,650.
15. Street Sense won the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by a record 10 lengths. He is the only Juvenile winner to win the Kentucky Derby the following spring.
16. In 30 years, 36 championship races have been decided by a margin of a head or less.
17. The 2003 Turf resulted in the only dead-heat win in the event’s history when High Chaparral and Johar hit the wire together, a head in front of Falbrav in a blanket finish.

18. Classic contender V. E. Day will try to emulate his dad with an outstanding performance in this year’s Breeders’ Cup. In 2007, his sire English Channel won the Turf by a record margin of 7 lengths. 
19. At 77, D. Wayne Lukas became the oldest trainer to win a Breeders’ Cup race when he won the 2012 Juvenile Sprint with Hightail. This year he can to break his own record with one of his four pre-entries, or Art Sherman can tie it with a win by California Chrome in the Classic.
20. Eugene Klein has the most wins by an owner with six. Stronach Stables and Allen Paulson are next with five, but Flaxman Holdings, Godolphin Racing, Juddmonte Farms and Wertheimer and Frere have four wins a piece and could all move into a tie for second place if any of their pre-entries win next weekend.
21. Six horses will try to join the exclusive ‘two-time Breeders’ Cup champion’ club this year, as previous winners Dank, Goldencents, Magician, Ria Antonia and the aforementioned Regally Ready and Stephanie’s Kitten are back for more.
