In what could likely develop into an all-out charge to the wire, the Oct. 6 $200,000 City of Hope Mile (G2T) at Santa Anita Park has attracted a field of nine 3-year-olds and up.
The field is headed by trainer Mark Glatt's hard knocking Sharp Samurai, who was most recently second in the Aug. 19 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2T). Sharp Samurai seeks his fourth graded stakes win.
Among those who also figure prominently in the City of Hope Mile are trainer Christophe Clement's White Flag, who comes off a close second in the Sept. 8 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (G3T); and Peter Miller's California-bred Fly to Mars, who was disqualified to third after finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of Sharp Samurai in the Del Mar Mile.
Sharp Samurai, owned by Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal, and Glatt was a winner of four consecutive turf stakes last year, culminating with the Oct. 28 Twilight Derby (G2T) win at 1 1/8 miles. Sharp Samurai later finished a close fourth as the 7-5 favorite in the Nov. 25 Del Mar's Hollywood Derby (G1T).
White Flag, a 4-year-old War Front colt, closed well to finish second in the Sept. 8 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint going 6 ½ furlongs. White Flag, based at Belmont Park, will try to be rolling late under Kent Desormeaux, who will be up for the first time.
