A full field of 12 is set to go in the $180,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Classic Cup Championship, which headlines a rich 12-race card for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses Oct. 26 at Zia Park.
Eight stakes worth more than $1.2 million comprise the Thoroughbred portion of the card, with the one-mile Rocky Gulch concluding the 12-race program.
That's Who, a 5-year-old by Quinton's Gold trained by Joel Marr for Sam and Latane Stevens, is the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Rocky Gulch. That's Who has not been out since finishing second as the even-money favorite in the Land of Enchantment Handicap July 27. Second in last year's race by a nose, the hard-knocking gelding has won 13 of 25 lifetime starts with earnings of $559,942.
Marr, who has 992 lifetime wins, also entered On Down the Road and E Bar Way in the Rocky Gulch. Lisa Rehburg's On Down the Road, who drew the rail Sunday, defeated That's Who in the Land of Enchantment and comes off a tough second in the Lineage Stakes Aug. 23. C. Donnell Echols' E Bar Way was third in the Lineage and third again in the University of New Mexico Handicap in his most recent start Oct. 4.
Their main competition is likely to come from Indy's Rocket, who won the UNM Handicap by one length and has a three-race winning streak for trainer Ross Amestoy.
In the $170,000 Peppers Pride New Mexico Classic Cup Championship, Soaring Dea is the slight 3-1 pick in a well-matched field of nine fillies and mares going one mile.
Midnightlowdown, also pegged at 3-1, is the morning line favorite in the $170,000 New Mexico Classic Cup Sprint Championship, which attracted a field of seven.
