Description:
The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has elected TV racing analyst and former jockey Richard Migliore to its board of directors.

Migliore, who was elected to the board Oct. 22, won nearly 4,500 races during his 30-year career and is the first jockey to sit on the TRF Board. His mounts earned more than $160 million before he retired in September 2010.

He has since become a respected television racing commentator for the New York Racing Association, HRTV, Madison Square Garden Productions, and Fox Sports. Additionally, Migliore works freelance as a motivational speaker and is tireless in his efforts to prioritize the welfare of former racehorses.

The addition of Migliore, a longtime TRF supporter and advocate for the humane treatment of off-track Thoroughbreds, augments an already distinguished and diverse TRF board.

In commenting on Migliore's election, TRF chairman John Moore said, "I first spoke to him about this four years ago, and this time the stars aligned. Rich perfectly complements the already formidable equine expertise of the TRF board. We already have on our board three prominent equine veterinarians, including two past presidents of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, a former chairman of the New York Racing and Wagering Board, and several former racetrack executives, breeders, and owners.

"Now, one of the great jockeys of all time will be focusing upon how TRF can expand its leadership role in saving, retraining, and providing aftercare for Thoroughbreds upon their retirement, and Rich will make a difference. Indeed, no other organization in the U.S. can match the diversity of talents found on today's TRF board. I couldn't be happier that Rich has joined the board."

"I am happy to be on the TRF board," Migliore said. "I have always understood that horses have given me every good thing in my life. And, I have always felt that it is the responsibility of everyone in the industry to make sure that the horses have good homes when they are through racing."

Migliore and his wife, Carmela, live on a farm in upstate New York that is home to their four children as well as four horses, one of which is a retired Thoroughbred named Skeptical.

"Richie has a huge heart," said TRF vice president of external affairs Diana Pikulski. "His love and appreciation for the Thoroughbred is only surpassed by his integrity and desire to do good for horses and people. We are thrilled he is joining the TRF board."
