Godolphin's multiple group 1 winner Hawkbill has been retired after a highly successful racing career in which the son of Kitten's Joy earned $4,777,480 million.
After taking three tries to break his maiden, Hawkbill won his next six starts, including the 2016 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (G1). The chestnut colt added wins in the 2017 Al Rayyan Aston Park Stakes (G3) and Princess of Wales's Arqana Racing Club Stakes (G2) and capped off his campaign last season with a runner-up finish to Johnny Bear in the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine.
Hawkbill began his 5-year-old season with consecutive wins at Meydan, including his open-lengths victory in the March 31 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic (G1), his final triumph. He most recently finished seventh in this year's Northern Dancer Turf Stakes and retires with 10 wins from 24 starts in six countries.
"He was a wonderful racehorse," trainer Charlie Appleby said. "He was an ambassador for Godolphin, who gave everybody connected with him immense pleasure. He was hugely popular in the yard.
"Now, he is set to enjoy a well-deserved retirement."
Bred in Kentucky by Helen K. Groves Revokable Trust, Hawkbill was a $350,000 purchase by John Ferguson from Gainesway's consignment to the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is out of the Giant's Causeway mare Trensa and is a half brother to grade 1 winner Free Drop Billy .
