Description:
Two-time champion Beholder has been scratched from the Fasig-Tipton November sale in Lexington to continue her recovery from an illness that knocked her out of the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), and then is to resume training.

"Beholder continues to recover from her illness, and while her fever is down and she's acting much better, veterinarian Jeff Blea of Von Bluecher, Blea, and Hunkin Inc. in California has advised us not to ship her cross country to Kentucky right now," said Ned Toffey, general manager of owner Spendthrift Farm in a statement released Oct. 25.

"We had radiographs taken of her lungs (Friday) and she did have some inflammation, so we're going to do right by Beholder and allow her to continue to get better. She'll be scratched from the November sale, and Dr. Blea believes she probably needs 30-60 days to recover. Then Beholder should be ready to resume training, pending a full recovery."

Beholder was withdrawn from consideration for the Distaff after she spiked a 104-degree fever the morning of Oct. 19. The 4-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes, trained by Richard Mandella, would have likely been favored Oct. 31 at Santa Anita Park to repeat her victory in last year's Distaff.

She also won the 2012 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I).

Beholder won Eclipse Awards in 2012 as champion juvenile filly and in 2013 as champion 3-year-old filly.

She also has had a previous physical issue this year, bruising a pastern in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park June 7 in her second start of the season. She returned from the injury to win the Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Sept. 27 and had been training forwardly for Breeders' Cup before coming down with a fever.

Beholder has 10 wins from 15 starts and $3,368,300 in earnings.
