Shotgun Kowboy wins the Lone Star Park Handicap at Lone Star Park

C. R. Trout's hombred Shotgun Kowboywill attempt to take home his third $175,000 Oklahoma Classics Cup, the richest event on the $1,000,000 Oklahoma Classics Night of stakes events Oct. 19 for eligible Oklahoma-bred Thoroughbreds at Remington Park.

The son of Kodiak Kowboy won the Classics Cup in 2015 and 2017. Should the 6-year-old gelding manage to capture a third victory in Friday's race, he will join Mr Ross (1999-2001) and Zee Oh Six (2002, 2005-2006), as the only horses to win the event three times. Shotgun Kowboy also holds the honor of being the first horse to win the Oklahoma Derby (G3) and Classics Cup in the same season.

The 1 1/16-mile Classics Cup will mark the 31st start for Shotgun Cowboy, who will break from post 5 under Jockey David Cabrera. Shotgun Cowboy has won three of his seven starts this year including the May 27 Lone Star Park Handicap (G3) at Lone Star Park where he defeated multi-millionaire earner and grade 1 winner Mubtaahij. He enters the race off a third-place effort in the Sept. 30 Governor's Cup Stakes at Remington in his most recent start.

Joining Shotgun Kowboy in the five-horse field is last year's Classics Cup runner-up Tuff Kid. Claimed Aug. 31 for $30,000 for new owner GK Racing, the 5-year-old Don't Get Mad gelding has won only one of his seven starts this year and also enters off a third-place finish in a Sept. 20 allowance optional claiming race over a mile and seventy yards at Remington.

Another contender to watch on Friday is Hyper Drive. Trained by Randy Oberlander, the son of Don't Get Mad last competed in the Classics Cup in 2016—the year Shotgun Kowboy did not run—where he finished seventh. Hyper Drive last won April 16 at Will Rogers Downs in a starter allowance race over the Classics Cup distance.

The Classics Cup is headlining race on the Oklahoma Classics Night card that features 10 stakes races. The evening begins with the OKC Distaff Turf and is followed later on the card by the Turf Classic, Filly and Mare Starter Allowance Stakes, Starter Allowance Stakes, Sprint Stakes, Distaff Sprint Stakes, Distaff Stakes, Juvenile Stakes, and concludes with the Lassie Stakes.
