Group 1 Prix Ganay winner and dual Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) place-getter Cloth of Stars has been retired from racing and will now take up a berth at Darley's French base of Haras du Logis.
"Cloth Of Stars has an awful lot going for him," said Darley's director of stallions, Sam Bullard. "He's a group 1 performer every season from 2 to 5 who was absolutely top class. He's beautifully bred, and a quality individual. Cloth of Stars is in exalted company, and we're delighted to be offering him to breeders."
The 5-year-old son of Sea The Stars retires with seven wins from 20 starts and a further 10 placings for career earnings of well in excess of £2.5 million (US$3,428,698).
Although best remembered for his exploits as an older horse, Cloth of Stars was also a smart juvenile, having won the Prix des Chenes (G3). He also finished runner-up to Robin of Navan in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1) at 2.
His upward trajectory continued at 3 as he picked up wins in the Prix la Force-Figaroscope (G3) and Prix Greffulhe (G2), before he claimed further black type, finishing third in the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (G1).
His 4-year-old season kicked off with a hat trick of victories that culminated in successes over the likes of Zarak and Hawkbill in the Prix Ganay. He went on to round off his campaign with a valiant runner-up effort to Enable in the Arc de Triomphe, a performance that saw him earn a career-high Racing Post Rating of 126.
Cloth of Stars could not add to his tally at 5 but continued to show high-class form in group 1 company, notably when he placed third to Enable in the most recent renewal of the Arc.
Bred by Peter Anastasiou and one of nine top-flight winners by Sea The Stars, Cloth of Stars is out of Strawberry Fledge, an unraced Kingmambo sibling to two group 1 winners, namely Vodafone Epsom Oaks (G1) heroine Light Shift—also the dam of Ulysses—and Tattersalls Gold Cup scorer Shiva.
His page is rich in group 1 form, as his third dam is European champion Northern Trick, who claimed the 1984 runnings of the Prix Vermeille and Prix de Diane Hermes (French Oaks, G1).
Cloth of Stars joined the Godolphin ranks when he was purchased by John Ferguson for 400,000gns ($675,444) at the 2014 edition of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
He becomes the third new addition to Darley's European roster in recent days, with the operation also revealing that Harry Angel will stand at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket while Jungle Cat will take up covering duty at Kildangan Stud in Ireland.
