A year after being sold to a Turkish breeder, grade 1 turf winner Paddy O'Prado seemed to be gaining some traction as a sire—getting three new black-type winners in 2018, including grade 3 winner O'Kratos.
Unfortunately, Paddy O'Prado's final crop of North American foals of 2018 will be his last. The son of El Prado died in a paddock accident prior to this year's breeding season and never got the chance to a cover a mare at Evicmen Harasi, according to an officer with the Jockey Club of Turkey.
Paddy O'Prado won five graded stakes for Donegal Racing from age 2 to 4. His sophomore season, when he won the 2010 Secretariat Stakes (G1T), Virginia Derby (G2T), and the Colonial Turf Cup Stakes (G2T), was his best. He also placed third in that year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) behind Super Saver and Ice Box . He retired with a $1,721,297 bankroll and entered stud at Spendthrift Farm in 2011.
Turkish owner/breeder Alp Semsettin Evcimen bought Paddy O'Prado in the summer of 2017 along with grade 1 winner Corinthian.
To date, Paddy O'Prado has sired seven black-type winners, led by graded stakes winners Sweeping Paddy, a full sister to multiple grade 1-placed winner Cherry Wine, and O'Kratos, who won this year's Marine Stakes (G3) at Woodbine.
