Rockingham Ranch and Gelfenstein Farm's X Y Jet will miss the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), Rockingham racing manager Brian Trump said Oct. 28.
Trump said trainer Jorge Navarro wasn't happy with how the 6-year-old Kantharos gelding worked Oct. 26 at Monmouth Park, or the way he came out of the drill. Trump said there was some filling in the gray millionaire's knee, which has already gone through three surgeries.
"Jorge said, 'If he's not 100%, he's not going to win the race, and it's not worth it,'" Trump said. "We're going to let him get better."
Trump said X Y Jet's connections have not considered wrapping up his career at this time, and they'll reevaluate the speedy sprinter once he recovers from the setback.
"We haven't gotten there yet," Trump said of a potential retirement for the seven-time stakes winner. "We're going to let him rest, and maybe the goal is to keep him in those Florida-bred races, if he moves forward after he recovers."
X Y Jet has a record of 10-7-2 from 22 starts and more than $1.5 million in earnings. In 2018, he has won three of his four starts, with his only loss a head second to Mind Your Biscuits in the Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored By Gulf News (G1).
Rockingham, partnered with co-owner David Bernsen, still has champion sprinter Roy H, along with Distinctive B (whom it owns alone), scheduled to compete in the Sprint.
