The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs may be the newest race on the Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup program, but what it lacks in history, it makes up for in talent. 

The opening race on Friday's program, the 5 1/2-furlong Turf Sprint for 2-year-olds has drawn a field of 12 competitors from around the world. 

Among the likely headliners is Shang Shang Shang, who took the June 21 Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot. The daughter of Shanghai Bobby broke her maiden April 26 at Keeneland by 2 1/4 lengths over fellow Juvenile Turf Sprint entry Moonlight Romance. The filly then shipped across the pond to the U.K., where she beat the boys to notch a second career Norfolk win for trainer Wesley Ward.

Trainer Mark Casse will saddle Strike Silver in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The grade 3-placed son of Violence  earned an automatic berth in the race with his score in the Oct. 7 Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland, where he beat another Ward trainee, Chelsea Cloisters, who also is entered.

Aidan O'Brien will send a pair of talented European-based turf runners. Among them is group 3 winner Sergei Prokofiev, a son of the late Scat Daddy. As a counterpart to the colt, O'Brien has also entered So Perfect, a Scat Daddy filly and fellow group 3 winner who finished second against males—a half-length behind the winner—in the Aug. 12 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) at Newmarket.  

Its Gonna Hurt, a "Win and You're In" challenge series victor of the Speakeasy Stakes, will miss the Juvenile Turf Sprint because of a suspensory issue and will instead get time off.
