It would be hard to envision a better beginning to a turf filly's career than the way Klaravich Stables' Newspaperofrecord has performed in her first two starts.
The Irish-bred, Chad Brown-trained daughter of Lope de Vega wasted no time to show off her class with a 6 3/4-length debut romp on the Saratoga Race Course inner turf Aug. 19, then jumped right into stakes company with aplomb and impressed again with a 6 1/2-length domination of eight rivals in the Sept. 30 Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park.
The water will get even deeper for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs, but Newspaperofrecord, the 2-1 morning-line favorite who'll start from post 6, hasn't shown any signs she might struggle handling some of the top 2-year-old females in the world.
But she isn't the only undefeated filly entered who impressed on debut at Saratoga over the summer. Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing's Concrete Rose is also unbeaten in two starts and closed with authority to break her maiden by 1 3/4 lengths sprinting on the Saratoga turf Aug. 20. The George Arnold-trained daughter of Twirling Candy followed her debut effort with a three-length victory in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland Oct. 10.
Per usual in Breeders' Cup grass races, however, a tough contingent from Europe figures to play a significant factor in the one-mile test, including three group winners from the powerhouse Irish barn of Aidan O'Brien. The leader of that group appears to be Kentucky-bred Just Wonderful, the last-out winner of the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket who also won the Flame Of Tara Irish E.B.F. Stakes (G3) at the Curragh Sept. 1. Weld Park Stakes (G3) winner Hermosa and another Kentucky-bred, Grangecon Stud Balanchine Stakes (G3) victress So Perfect, round out the trio campaigned by owners associated with Coolmore.
Also from across the Atlantic are French group winners Lily's Candle, last-out winner of the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (G1), and undefeated Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club de Turquie (G3) winner East.
Godolphin's La Pelosa, a multiple group 3-placed filly trained by Charlie Appleby, got her feet wet in North America Sept. 16 with a one-length victory in the Natalma Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine.
My Gal Betty, who finished second in the Natalma after a stakes win at Woodbine, is also in the Juvenile Fillies Turf field, as well as Jessamine second Pakhet, Jessamine third Belle Laura, and Miss Grillo second Varenka.
The only West Coast representative in the field is Glen Hill Farm's Summering, who wowed in her debut at Del Mar July 29, took the Sept. 3 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths, then finished third last time out Oct. 8 in the Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
