After being pre-entered but not cracking the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) field, Al Shaqab Racing's Toast of New York will start in the $200,000 Marathon Stakes Presented by TAA (G2) Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs.
As the 10th race, the 1 3/4-mile test will close Friday's card when it follows the day's final Breeders' Cup race, the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). The distance test has drawn 10 entries.
The 2014 runner-up in the Classic, Toast of New York was returned to training in late 2017 after standing stud in Qatar. He recently finished second to Mind Your Biscuits in the Sept. 29 Lukas Classic Stakes (G3) at Churchill. Toast of New York has been stabled at Churchill since mid-September but was No. 19 on the Breeders' Cup Classic pre-entry list. A maximum of 14 horses are allowed to run in the Classic, and he is on the also-eligible list.
Trained by Jamie Osborne, Toast of New York will break from post 9 under Julien Leparoux.
Among the other challengers to Toast of New York is Centennial Farms' Temperence Hill Invitational Stakes winner Rocketry, who is the 7-2 morning-line favorite. Rocketry had 14 starts on the turf before trainer Jimmy Jerkens opted to try the 4-year-old colt on dirt in the 1 5/8-mile Temperence Hill, in which he scored a 1 1/2-length win under jockey Joel Rosario.
Another in the field is Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum's two-time stakes winner Dabster for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. A 4-year-old colt by Curlin , Dabster recently reeled off victories in the Aug. 22 Harry F. Brubaker Stakes and Sept. 16 Los Alamitos Special Stakes. One start before those efforts, he placed third in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar.
Also in the Marathon field is DARRS' Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) runner-up Honorable Duty for locally based trainer Brendan Walsh, who won this race in 2016 with Scuba and in 2014 with Cary Street.
In the other non-Breeders' Cup stakes race on Friday's card, the one-turn-mile Street Sense Stakes for 2-year-olds, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has entered debut maiden race winner Improbable.
Campaigned by the partners who brought Triple Crown winner Justify to the track—WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, and SF Racing—Improbable was successful in his debut after sitting just off an early :45 half-mile pace and closing late under jockey Drayden Van Dyke. Improbable, a $200,000 purchase from the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, drew post position 2 and will again be ridden by Van Dyke.
Among the other challengers in the Street Sense field is 15 3/4-length maiden winner Trophy Chaser for owner/trainer Juan Avila.
