Beach Patrol wins the 2017 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park

Multiple grade 1 winner Beach Patrol has been purchased from Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani's Al Shahania Stud by LEX, Inc. Japan in a deal negotiated by Dr. Naoya Yoshida of Winchester Farm in Lexington, it was announced Nov. 13.

The 5-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid  will stand at Japan's Lex Stud.

Initially campaigned by Wayne Catalano and then by Phil D'Amato for Gary and Mary West, Beach Patrol was purchased by James Covello, Sheep Pond Partners, and Head of Plains Partners and shifted to the barn of Chad Brown in spring of 2016. He won the 2016 Secretariat Stakes (G1T) at 3 and the 2017 Arlington Million XXXV Stakes (G1T) and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes (G1T) at 4, and was runner-up in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) last year at Del Mar. Al Shahania Stud obtained an interest near the end of his career.

"Beach Patrol caught my eye after winning the Secretariat Stakes in August of 2016, and I continued to be impressed by his consistent ability to run at a top level," said Dean Lavy, representative for Al Shahania Stud. "(Al Shahania) was then fortunate enough to buy into him and eventually own him outright.

"He is a very well-balanced, correct good-looking horse. We are delighted he will be going to Japan with LEX, Inc. for the next successful part of his career. We are pleased to be associated with the next phase of his career and we are sure he will be a success."

From 19 starts with a 5-7-3 record, Beach Patrol raced 12 times in grade 1 company, earned three grade 1 wins, and placed six times in grade 1 events. His earnings stand at $2,532,945. He was bred in Kentucky by Nancy Shuford out of the Quiet American mare Bashful Bertie, and sold to agent Ben Glass as a weanling for $250,000 through Elm Tree Farm's consignment to the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
