Hollywood Turf Cup Win Would be Big for Ashleyluvssugar

Veteran Ashleyluvssugar will try to nail down his first graded stakes of the season—and extend an impressive streak—in the $200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (G2T) Nov. 23 at Del Mar.

The 1 1/2-mile race for 3-year-olds and up will provide 7-year-old Ashleyluvssugar an opportunity to earn at least one grade 2 win in a fourth consecutive season. The homebred Game Plan gelding won the 2015 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T) and San Luis Rey Stakes (G2T), 2016 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (G2T) and Del Mar Handicap Presented by the Japan Racing Association (G2T), and the 2017 Charles Whittingham.

Ashleyluvssugar has not won in five starts this year for Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stable, and Ciaglia Stable, but enters Friday's race off his strongest seasonal effort: a runner-up finish to Liam the Charmer in the Sept. 30 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita Park. Ashleyluvssugar finished second to Texas Ryano  in the 2016 Hollywood Turf Cup.

Friday's race picked up a strong supplemental entry in grade 1 winner Bigger Picture, who was entered in the Nov. 17 Red Smith Stakes (listed, pending review) at Aqueduct Racetrack but was scratched when the race was moved from the turf to the main track. The third-place finisher from this year's John Henry Turf Championship, Ya Gotta Wanna, is also entered.
