Symposium: Getting a Line on Sports Betting

Attendees at last year's Global Symposium on Racing and Gaming
Three panels and the keynote address scheduled for the Dec. 3-5 Global Symposium on Racing will cover sports wagering, as the horse racing industry continues to grapple with the potential challenges and opportunities of sports books popping up in racing jurisdictions.
The first panel addressing sports wagering is titled "Legalized Sports Betting Opportunities-How Can the Industry's
Marketers Create an Upside for Horse Racing?" The Dec. 4 panel will discuss how the racing industry can reach the sports betting audience.
A day later, "Sports Betting: Coming to a Jurisdiction Near You" will touch on lessons learned by jurisdictions that already offer sports wagering, and "Sports Betting: A Friend or Foe in the New Era of Sports and Gaming Competition?" will broach regulatory and integrity issues and how they relate to racing.
Jack Anderson, a professor of sports law at Melbourne Law School, will deliver the keynote address titled "Integrity in the World of Commercial Sport," which will address the "repercussions for all sports arising from the recent United States Supreme Court decision to liberalize gambling."
Other topics at the Symposium, hosted by the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program, touch on marketing ("The Trifecta for a Successful Content Marketing Strategy" and "How Positive Events Focused on the Horse Translate to Positive Returns at the Track"), technology ("The Blockchain and Cryptocurrency--Coming to a Track Near You?" and "Technology to Take Racing into the Future"), and regulatory issues.
Opening day of the Symposium, Dec. 3, will feature a two-hour "NHC Handicapping Contest Workshop," where the NTRA will host tournament directors, racetrack general managers, marketing directors, and ADW executives. The session will cover formats, marketing, and other aspects designed to "drive participation and revenue."
Some speakers scheduled to appear at the Symposium include representatives from the NTRA, AmTote International, ThoroFan, the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation, Monarch Content Management, NYRA, William Hill, Visit Horse Country, Monmouth Park, Godolphin, TVG, Sportech, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Churchill Downs Inc., the Retired Racehorse Project, Gaming Law Review, TrackMaster, Ruidoso Downs, Remington Park, Global Gaming Solutions, and Lone Star Park.
