Shanghai Bobby at Ashford Stud

Top-five second-crop sire Shanghai Bobby has been sold to Japanese interests and relocated to Arrow Stud in Hokkaido, according to Ashford Stud, where the stallion retired to stud in 2014. The 8-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday arrived at Arrow Stud from quarantine Nov. 24.

Shanghai Bobby was bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings and sold at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $105,000 to Frank Brothers on behalf of Starlight Racing.

At 2, he went undefeated in five starts and captured the Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (G2), Foxwoods Champagne Stakes (G1), and the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) on his way to earning the champion 2-year-old title. The colt had a rocky sophomore campaign during which he missed the Triple Crown series due to a pelvis fracture and then injured a suspensory ligament while competing in the Aljamin Stakes at Belmont Park, which he won.

Shanghai Bobby ended 2017 as North America's fourth-leading freshman sire by progeny earnings, with three black-type winners. As a second-crop sire, he is ranked fourth again through Nov. 28, with two black-type winners and progeny earnings of more than $3.2 million. His top Northern Hemisphere runners this year are two-time stakes winner Shanghai Starlet and Norfolk Stakes (G2) winner Shang Shang Shang

Shanghai Bobby also shuttled to Brazil in 2014 and Chile in 2015. Worldwide, he's been represented by 11 black-type winners and four grade/group stakes winners. His progeny have earned $4,788,106 to date.
